Manufacturing Taster for Glasgow Pupils

High school pupils across Glasgow gained an insight into the manufacturing world whenspecialist vehicle manufacturer, Allied Vehicles, opened its doors as part of the See Inside Manufacturing initiative.

Allied’s 420-strong team at the Possilpark plant was joined by pupils from Bannerman, Hillpark, Lourdes, Roshall and Smithycroft schools, as well as local colleges and job centres.  The week long programme was part of a UK-wide bid to attract more young people into careers in engineering and production.

See Inside Manufacturing

See Inside Manufacturing is a partnership initiative led for the automotive sector by the Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders (SMMT), in conjuction with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).  Its aim is to encourage links between education and industry, with the goal of attracting new talent to fuel Britain’s vital manufacturing sector.

Allied Vehicles managing director, Paul Nelson, comments:

“This is the third year we’ve been involved with See Inside Manufacturing and we’re delighted to be taking part again.  We believe it’s vitally important to engage and excite youngsters about the highly-skilled, highly-trained and well-paid world of engineering.”

Nelson continues: “Allied provides a wide range of skilled jobs in our sector and it’s really important that we develop the stars of the future to continue Scotland’s legacy as an engineering and manufacturing hub.”

Community

Allied’s involvement with this initiative is part of the company’s ongoing community involvement which also sees it supporting  the Primary Engineers programme, the Tigers scheme for school leavers and offering various Modern Apprenticeships.

During the factory visits young learners were able to see a wide range of manufacturing related activities, from pre-production and component stores to welding, auto-electronics and vehicle assembly.  They also enjoyed meeting Allied’s team of design engineers, which is responsible for creating and testing the company’s range of special purpose taxi and mobility vehicles.
